Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to bring basic information related to special phenomenon of religious art and imagery and cult of images in the late middle ages and early modern period. The stress will be laid upon key role of images - as visual media within the tradition of European reformations and Counter-Reformation. The images will be presented as special "agents" that bear special functions - stimulation of devotion, educational role, polemic, propaganda, and the negative attitude toward religious images as well. It will show how complex role the religious image played within popular mentality as well as in intellectual discourse.
At the end of this course the student will be able to understand and explain phenomenon of religious imagery in historical context of late middle ages and early modern period. The student will be able to interpret visual media within the broad scope from to official art to popular graphic arts. At the end of the course the students will understand the role and characteristic of "images" in the context of post-Reformation Europe of the 16.-17th centuries.

Prerequisites
|
The student should have basic knowledge about historical background of European reformation movements in early modern period. Reading skills of English and German are obligatory.

Assessment methods and criteria
|

For acknowledgment of the course it is necessary to be active within the course, study provided texts and discuss on them, and finally, to write a paper (5-10 pages/1 pages = 1800 characters), including footnotes and list of bibliography. The purpose of the paper is to analyse freely chosen work of art from the point of view related to its "confessionality".
