Course content
1. The beginnings of Christian art. Western and Eastern traditions in Christian architecture. Ravenna. 2. The Cult of Relics and the Global Middle Ages. 3. Early medieval art and traditions of antiquity. 4. Emperor Charlemagne and the art of his time. Carolingian Renaissance. 5. Book painting of late antiquity, British Isles, Carolingian and Ottonian times.´ 6. Art of Byzantium. Medieval icons. 7. Medieval Islamic art. 8. Benedictines. The cultural and artistic environment of the monastery in Cluny and its importance. 9. Ottonian and Salian art in Germany. 10. Romanesque architecture in France and Italy, individual creative centers. 11. Romanesque sculpture in France and Italy and its significance. Wall painting in the Romanesque period. 12. Romanesque art under the Stauf dynasty. 13. The beginnings of Gothic in architecture (Saint-Denis).

Learning outcomes
The DVU/BUSE2 lecture cycle focuses on the period of the early and high Middle Ages from the fall of antiquity to the 13th century. It presents an overview of artistic development trends in Europe during this period (outside Bohemian lands).

An interest in the subject.
