Course content
1. Introduction to the theory and history of restoration 2. Key European and world institutions and international conventions related to restoration 3. Heritage renewal and restoration in the Czech Republic and Slovakia 4. Legislative and ethical frameworks of monument restoration 5. Principles of preventive conservation 6. Diagnostics of historical monuments 7. Documentation and handling of art objects 8. Requirements, reading and interpretation of restoration documents 9. Restoration of panel paintings and hanging paintings 10. Restoration of architectural art 11. Restoration of wooden works and their polychromy 12. Introduction to the issues of building restoration 13. Requirements for chemical and technological surveys and possibilities of their interpretation

Learning outcomes
The course offers an overview of the theory and practice of restoration and conservation interventions on movable cultural monuments and artistic architectural components. Students will learn about the current legislation that regulates these interventions in cultural monuments, about key institutions in the field of conservation and restoration, international conventions and ethical standards of monument restoration. The lecturing will also focus on developing students' abilities to diagnose the technical condition of art-historical monuments and the possibilities of their preventive conservation.

Prerequisites
Interest in the specific topics; basic orientation in general European history

Assessment methods and criteria

Continuous completion of assignments, producing a written paper, written exam to check the knowledge of lecture topics. Attending at least 80% of classes.
