Learning outcomes
Even though languages presumably all have the same expressive power, the inner working of all languages are unique. Quite different from English or Czech, Chinese has less morphology, the encoding of many grammatical properties, such as plurality, tense, and aspect, among other things, are done in very different ways. The course introduces students to Chinese grammar from a comparative and theoretical perspective. The course provides an in-depth treatment of a range of linguistic issues, taking into account the most recent discussions in the field. Students will acquire the skills in identifying grammatical patterns and articulating grammatical differences in a precise and concise manner. The course is investigative in nature and is suitable for students who are curious about Chinese grammar, especially beyond a merely descriptive level.
