Course content
1. Introduction to semiotics: o What is semiotics? o Basic concepts (sign, meaning, encoding, decoding) o Applications of semiotics in various fields 2. Cultural semiotics: o Culture as a system of signs o The role of culture in communication o Cultural differences in the interpretation of signs 3. Semiotics of language: o Language as a primary sign system o Verbal and nonverbal communication o Cultural specifics of language (e.g., euphemisms, taboos, forms of address) 4. Visual semiotics: o Image as a sign o Icons, indexes, symbols o Visual communication in different cultures (e.g., advertising, art) 5. Body semiotics: o The body as a carrier of meaning o Gestures, facial expressions, haptics o Cultural differences in nonverbal communication 6. Semiotics of space and time: o Space and time as cultural constructs o Orientation in space, perception of time o Cultural differences in architecture, urban planning 7. Semiotics of religion: o Religion as a system of signs o Symbols, rituals, myths o Comparison of religious symbols in different cultures 8. Semiotics of everyday life: o Everyday objects as carriers of meaning o Fashion, design, consumer culture o Cultural differences in consumption 9. Semiotics of East Asia: o Specifics of semiotic systems in China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan o Comparison with European cultures o Examples from literature, film, art 10. Comparative Eurasian semiotics: o Comparison of semiotic systems in various European countries o The influence of history and culture on semiotic systems o Examples from literature, film, art 11. Intercultural communication and semiotics: o Barriers in intercultural communication o The role of semiotics in overcoming cultural barriers o Strategies for effective intercultural communication 12. Presentation of visual work on the topic.

Introduce students to the basics of semiotics and its applications in intercultural communication. - Develop the ability to analyze cultural signs and symbols in different contexts. - Compare and contrast the semiotic systems of East Asia and Europe (especially China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan). - Provide students with tools for more effective intercultural communication.
