Learning outcomes |
The visual notation of language using standardized marks can take many forms. One is prosodic transcription, which can capture otherwise challenging-to-grasp elements of spoken language, such as stress and caesura. It is essential in tonal languages such as Chinese. The long-term observed decline of fully tonic syllables in modern colloquial language significantly impacts the overall rhythmic structure of continuous speech. And it is a prosodic transcription that represents a valuable tool with which we can subject these remarkable language changes to linguistic analysis. During the course, students will first become familiar with the phonology of Chinese and the circumstances of its origin, as well as the basic principles of prosodic transcription by O. Švarný. They will then verify the acquired knowledge in practice when they try to transcribe speeches in the tonal language and learn to analyze the created transcription. The course output will be the analysis and description of a text sample.
