Course content
Topics: - zero equivalents, usage of notes - morphological and syntactic equivalence - translating politeness - literal vs. free translation, shift of meaning - explicitness / implicitness, specification / generalization - translating names, nicknames etc. - colloquial language, slang, dialects - expressivity, vulgarisms, onomatopoeic words - stylistic equivalence, layers of vocabulary - puns - authors´ style In each seminar translations of texts by contemporary Japanese writers will be analysed.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this seminar is to teach the students of Master´s degree the basic steps of translation process when translating fiction. The first part of lesson provides the students with translation theory in the form of students´ presentation. The second part is focused on translation - in each lesson one piece of text (modern Japanese fiction) is translated.
