Course content
Topics: 1. The oldest cultures on Japanese territory 2. The emergence of a centralized state 3. Japan and the Outside World: Contacts with Mainland Asia and Europe by 1868 4. Rice as a foundation for everything: Agriculture and Land Ownership 5. The World of Prince Genji: Society and Culture of the Heian Period 6. The Dualism of the State Establishment: The Military Nobility on the Rise 7. The Mongol Invasions: The Beginning of the End of the Kamakura Rule 8. The Warring States period and the unification of Japan 9. Feudal state in the Tokugawa period 10. Religious and ideological systems in Japan 11. In the name of the law: The life of individual layers of Japanese society 12. Restoration of Imperial Power

Learning outcomes

By completing this course, students will gain a deeper understanding of the individual periods of Japanese history before 1868, thanks to which they will be able to analyze and characterize the main historical milestones of Japanese history. Students will also be able to place the given events in the wider context of Japanese history, which will enable them to present a comprehensive image of the development of Japanese society in the historical periods preceding the Meiji Revolution
