Course content
This course explores the socio-political and cultural dimensions of new media in China in the twenty-first century. In the first part of the course ("order") students will reflect on the ideological, social and policy context of internet-mediated communication and creative industries in today's China beyond the censorship paradigm. In the second part of the course ("defiance"), students will examine case studies from popular culture, online discourse, and experimental art that express resistance, rebellion and/or mockery vis-?-vis the above-mentioned order. 1. Learning outcomes
This course explores the socio-political and cultural dimensions of new media in China in the twenty-first century. In the first part of the course ("order") students will reflect on the ideological, social and policy context of internet-mediated communication and creative industries in today's China beyond the censorship paradigm. In the second part of the course ("defiance"), students will examine case studies from popular culture, online discourse, and experimental art that express resistance, rebellion and/or mockery vis-?-vis the above-mentioned order.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will have acquired: Knowledge of the socio-political, institutional and policy context of media and Internet culture in postMao China; Knowledge of key trends, phenomena and personalities of reform-era Chinese media, with a focus on the 21st century; Skills to identify, critically evaluate and employ relevant sources; Practical competences, including presenting in front of an audience, research and writing teamwork, and inclass discussion.

Assessment methods and criteria

Final coursework portfolio (100% of the grade). a. Individual Essay (ca. 2200 words including refs., in the style of a short academic article) on a topic chosen by the student (typically the student will discuss the topic with the lecturer before they start writing). Weighted 50 percent of the final mark. b. One group presentations/slideshows (or individual presentations if the number of students is too low; ca. 10 slides of content each) on a topic assigned by the lecturer and presented in class for formative feedback (50 percent of the mark). c. Individual Self-reflection on the learning experience. Not graded for content, but 0.2 points are deducted from the pre-roundup final mark if it's missing.
