Learning outcomes
From the perspective of climate change, the continental part of Southeast Asia is considered one of the most vulnerable regions in the world. If we were to look for a common denominator that characterizes agricultural production and life in this area, it would be water. It is still a predominantly agricultural region, where local communities depend on rice cultivation, fishing, and many other agricultural and economic activities that require large amounts of water to function. However, this tropical region is currently facing many challenges associated with climate change, such as rising sea levels, heat waves, floods, and droughts. The increasing intensity of storms and frequency of typhoons, which negatively affect social and economic life in the area, are also problematic. All this is happening at a time when important watercourses are increasingly being used for economic purposes, such as the construction of dams and irrigation canals, which reduces the amount of water in the lower parts of these watercourses and increases the silting of riverbeds with sand and soil. This has a significant impact on the lives of local communities, which are facing major changes in their way of life. One of the key indicators of these changes is water management. This course will therefore focus on climate change in mainland Southeast Asia, the role of water in these changes, how local communities are responding to these changes (or how this is affecting economic production in the affected regions), and what we in Southeast Asia can learn from this process.
