Course content
Topics: - Kojiki - diary literature - monogatari - Genji monogatari - zuihitsu sketches - setsuwa genre - gunki monogatari - ukiyozhosi, Ihara Saikaku - gesaku, yomihon, Ueda Akinari - Kokugaku

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to provide students with a deeper knowledge of typical Japanese prosaic forms and their prominent representatives. Students analyse example texts (both in Japanese original and Czech translation) with respect to particular literary forms, genres, usage of language, application of aesthetic principles.
- understanding the development of classical Japanese literature and the main genres against the background of social and cultural changes - understanding the specificity of literary representation of reality - understanding the connection between the past and the present as mediated by literature - appreciation of the importance of cultural heritage - acquiring the ability to work with literary terminology - improving the ability to interpret a text as a structure of meaning - improving the ability to write academic essays - developing the ability to engage in scholarly polemics
Prerequisites
Bachelor's degree in Japanese philology, sufficient knowledge of the Japanese language to work with primary and secondary texts in Japanese.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam, Seminar Work

attendance, active participation in class, cca 1300 pages of compulsory reading (primary sources - 1000 pages, secondary sources - 300 pages), oral report, essay, written exam
