This is a semester-long course devoted to traditional Chinese literature and culture. Its aim is not only to chronologically trace the development of traditional Chinese culture through the succession of dynasties, from the first Shang Dynasty (2nd millennium BCE) to the last Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), but also to reflect on the current revival of traditional Chinese culture in state narratives and popular culture, ranging from online literature to anime and video games to trends on social media. The course is open to anyone interested in traditional Chinese culture and does not require any specific prior knowledge.
