Learning outcomes
This interdisciplinary course examines environmental issues and challenges in Central Asia from social, economic, cultural, and political perspectives. Central Asia includes five countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The course will explore numerous dimensions of the subject, including the environmental and social consequences of modern industries, the role of different actors and institutions, and policy debates on topics such as nuclear energy, waste management, water, and renewable energies. The institutional and social barriers to environmental and social policies will be scrutinized. The course will also examine strategies for environmental regulation at the national and transnational levels.

Students are expected to attend lectures and seminars. The course consists of 13 lectures (13 hours) and 13 interactive seminars (13 hours), which involve discussions of the required readings and individual and group assignments. Students are expected to read the specified materials for both lectures and seminars. Students will also develop their analytical and critical writing skills while working on the final paper. Regular, active, and informed participation is expected. Sixty percent of the assessment will be based on attendance, preparation of the readings, and participation in class discussions. Students will be evaluated on their ability to contribute qualitatively to the discussion, answer questions based on the readings, offer their own interpretations, and respond to comments made by other students. The final paper should be 3,000 words. The final paper should relate to any aspect of the course. It can be a critical review of existing literature on a specific topic or an original piece of research. The format and topic must be approved by the instructor.
