Learning outcomes
This course introduces China as a multi-ethnic and "multi-national" state comprising 56 minzu (ethnic groups). While the Han represent the majority, this course directs students' attention to the other 55 minzu, identified as "minority nationalities" (shaoshu minzu). A multidisciplinary approach is adopted for this course, incorporating sources from anthropology, history, ethnic studies, and cultural studies. Throughout the term, students are encouraged to discuss their own ethnic experiences and compare minority issues in China with similar cases globally. Students will be introduced not only to the history and culture of these groups but also to the evolution of China's ethnic minority policiesspecifically the shift from "the unity of the Chinese nationalities" to "the common consciousness of the Chinese nation." All lectures and examinations will be conducted in English.

Assessment methods and criteria

Class participation (20%), Shorter Responses to the Readings in the classroom (15%), Research Proposal (15%), Research Presentation (10%), Final essay (40%) Attendance and Participation: Students are expected to attend class regularly and participate actively. Each student is permitted two to three absences, provided they are supported by reasonable excuses. Weekly Readings: Readings will be assigned each week. Every student is required to read the assigned papers and contribute to the in-class discussions. Midterm Requirement: A 700-word research proposal for the final essay must be submitted in Week 7 as a midterm assessment. Presentations: During Weeks 10-12, each student will give a 5-7 minute presentation outlining their final essay topic, methodology, and central argument. Final Essay: A final essay of 2,000-2,500 words is due in Week 13 as the final exam.
