1. Language and its functions; division of linguistics (main and borderline linguistic disciplines); language development; classification of languages (genetic classification, typological classification); 2. Spoken and written form of language (differences between written and spoken speech); 3. Graphic aspect of language (development and types of writing, international phonetic alphabet, transliteration and transcription); 4. Sound aspect of language (phonetics and phonology, idioms, classification of consonants and vowels, syllable, suprasegmental elements, phoneme, phonological oppositions); 5. Morphology (the essence of grammar and its division, grammatical categories and ways of expressing them in Asian languages, more detailed characteristics of elements typical of Asian languages such as reduplication, expressing categories of time and space, measure words, expressing mood. 6. Vocabulary (lexicology, lexicography and semantics; word formation, vocabulary enrichment, word and its meaning) Correct understanding of the presented material is verified by solving language problems.

The course is intended for first-year students of philological disciplines at the Department of Asian Studies. The teaching is oriented towards clarifying the basic concepts of general linguistics and linguistic disciplines, taking into account the specific features of Asian languages. The course focuses on the graphic, sound, morphological and lexical aspects of the language.
