Evolution (basic principles), phylogenetics and speciation process. Hierarchy of taxonomical units. Historical overview of development of the classification approaches (evolutionary, natural, artificial) and their most famous representatives. Changes in plant systems and their causes. Evolutionary origin of higher plants, adaptation to terrestrial life, telome and stellar theory. Life cycle, its evolution and comparison among each evolutionary stage. Evolutionary relationships among main taxonomical groups of higher plants and their characteristics: bryophytes (Marchantiophyta, Anthocerotophyta, Bryophyta), ancient vascular plants (Rhyniophyta, Zosterophyllophyta, Trimerophyta), ferns (Lycopodiophyta, Monilophyta), progymnosperms (Progymnospermophyta), gymnosperms (Lyginopteridophyta, Cycadophyta, Cycadeoideophyta, Ginkgoophyta, Pinophyta), flowering plants (Magnoliophyta). Evoluční vztahy a systém v uvedených odděleních vyšších rostlin. Přehled a charakteristika významnějších zástupců (druhů) jednotlivých systematických skupin. Principles of collecting and documenting findings of higher plant species and identifying them based on diagnostic characteristics, including adherence to species and habitat protection measures. Verification of nomenclature and taxonomic classification using specialized digital databases; the method of automated plant identification from photographs and its limitations.

Learning outcomes

Introduction to the field and the terms definition (systematics, taxonomy, classification, nomenclature); methods in Plant Systematics research.
Student should be able to (after attending the course): - explain main terms and methods in Plant Systematics - describe origin of classification systems of Vascular plants - resolve origin and evolution of major phylogenetic groups of Vascular Plants - classify major groups of higher palnts and their most important central-European represebntatives - identify common species of Vascular plants in Czechia (justification of identification and citation of the source used) - prepare properly labeled herbarium specimens and justify plant identifications based on diagnostic characteristics using a professional identification resource - explain, using a selected group of higher plants as an example, how scientific evidence influences the group's phylogenetic classification, and evaluate the importance of the sources used - ability to use specialized digital databases to verify a plant's name and classification - ability to critically verify the results of automated identification based on diagnostic characteristics - ability to present plant classification to studentsin a brief, model explanationas an evolving system and demonstrate its connections to genetics and evolutionary biology
