Course content
General characteristics of medicinal plants, the most important groups, history of cultivation, collecting and use of medicinal plants; The most important chemical compounds and their effects: Amino-acids, peptides, proteins; Sugars; Cellulose, gums, pectins; Lipids; Glycosides; Tannins; Essential oils; Alkaloids; Hormones; Enzymes; Vitamins; Antibiotics; Biological characteristics of the most important plant families and species of medicinal plants grown under conditions of the Central Europe (Apiaceae, Boraginaceae, Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Ranunculaceae, Brassicaceae, Malvaceae, Solanaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Rosaceae, Verbenaceae, Valerianaceae, Plantaginaceae, Tiliaceae and others); Biological characteristics of the most important plant families and species of cultivated medicinal plants: Polygonaceae (Rheum), Rosaceae (Agrimonia), Fabaceae (Galega, Glycyrrhiza, Ononis, Trigonella), Onagraceae (Oenothera), Apiaceae (Anethum, Archangelica, Carum, Coriandrum, Foeniculum, Levisticum, Pimpinella), Hypericaceae (Hypericum), Malvaceae (Alcea, Althea, Malva), Valerianaceae (Valeriana), Solanaceae (Atropa, Hyoscyamus), Scrophulariaceae (Digitalis, Verbascum), Plantaginaceae (Plantago), Lamiaceae (Hyssopus, Ladanella, Lavandula, Leonurus, Majorana, Marrubium, Melissa, Mentha, Ocimum, Origanum, Salvia, Satureja, Thymus), Asteraceae (Achillea, Arctium, Artemisia, Calendula, Cnicus, Chamaemellum, Inula, Matricaria, Silybum); Plant cultivation and collecting, processing and drug use; Genetic resources, breeding; Legislation aspects Students will learn (preferably on living plants) to recognize the most significant morphological traits typical for selected plant families. One excursion to botanical garden is aimed at practical identification of medicinal plants in nature, the second excursion is organized to the company processing medicinal plants, Naděje in Brodek u Konice

Learning outcomes
The main aim of this subject is to give the students fundamental information on the most important groups of medicinal plants growing under climatic conditions of the Central Europe, on their chemical compounds and effects, principles of their cultivation, collecting and processing.

Knowledge of the most frequent plant species of the flora of the Czech Republic and Europe.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Oral exam

Knowledge in extent of lectures, practical exercises and recommended literature, 100% participation in practical exercises; Correct determination (Czech and scientific name) of selected species of medicinal plats (living or herbarized samples).
