Course content
Part Botany Applied botany, economic botany. Agriculture and domestication of plants. Cultivated plants, wild plant species, weedy plants. Weedy plants, they origin, characteristics, economic impact. Reproduction of weeds. Regulation of weeds. Classification of weeds. Determination of the most important species of weeds. Wild plant species potentially used as food (minor cereals, minor vegetables), energetic plants. Wild plant species and weedy species used in plant breeding of cultivated crops (example Lactuca spp.). Part Zoology The outline, important terms and general principles. Contents of applied zoology. Plant protection: history of plant protection, integrated plant protection, prognosis, method of summation of effective temperatures, signalization. Means of pest control - physical, chemical and biological, groups of insecticides, resistance, methods of determination of resistance. Biological agents of pest control. Requirements on bioagents. Comparison between chemical and biological plant protection, methods of biological protection. Particular techniques of biological control. Pest control by characteristics of host organism. Protective management in farming technology. Use of pheromones in plant protection. Organic, biological agriculture. Systematic overview of pests in fields, gardens, stored products and food factories, incl. recognition of major species. Forest pests. Main factors of malignance. Species of veterinary and medical importance. Systematic overview of forest pests and species of veterinary and medical importance, incl. recognition of major species. Economic pests in vertebrates. Use of vertebrates in integrated pest control.

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on following topics: plant genetic resources and plant protection, weeds, insects as plant pests and as a pests in plant products.
After attending the course, students should be able to: Debate the application of theoretical experiences of Plant and Animal Sciences in the industry; Explain the relation between cultivated plants, wild plant species and weeds; Explain the economic impact of weeds, and ways of their regulation; Determine of the most important species of weeds. Debate the problems of weeds and pests, their regulation and protection. To apply acquired knowledge in the teaching of students of basic schools.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of botany and zoology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Written exam

Knowledge in extent of the lectures and practical exercises; 100% attendance in practical exercises. Botany: identification (Czech and scientific name) of selected species of weeds (living or herbarized plants). Zoology: Written test, 100% attendance in practical exercises. Parts of a written test: Correct determination of pest species in agriculture, forest or medical entomology (Czech and scientific name). Basic knowledge of bionomics of these species and their activity (as pests in agriculture and forestry, and as vectors of serious diseases).
