1) Historical perspectives on family values, kinship and patriarchy in traditional Vietnamese society. 2) Contemporary Vietnamese family and society, its values, morales. 3) The deep roots of Vietnamese culture regarding gender relations from traditional to modern society. 4) Socio-cultural influence of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism in Vietnamese society 5) State polices on promoting new socio-cultural values and gender equality in Vietnamese society. 6) Ethnic identity and culture vs modern Vietnamese national identity and culture. 7) Specifics of ethnic identities in large Vietnamese ethnic groups (e.g. Hoa, Khmer, Cham, Hmong) and their relations with the Viet/Kinh majority. 8) State polices on suppressing ethnic identities and creating a national identity - despite the cultural and ethnic diversity of the nation. 9) Mobility of the Vietnamese people, difrent kind of diasporic identities and political entities. 10) Different typologies and relations to the country of origin, different levels of integration as well as their capacity to act transnationally across borders. 11) Vietnamese diaspora and its cultural influence in Vietnam. 12) Foreign influences

The objective of this course is to furnish the students with understanding of contemporary Vietnamese society, its culture and values. A number of key issues in the development of modern Vietnam will be discussed, including family, social class, gender, ethnicity, and last but not the least national identity. Thus, the course will be divided into three thematic blocks, which will be dedicated to three levels of Vietnamese culture: 1) Local approach (cultural diversities); 2) National level (unification process and national culture); 3) International aspects (diasporic Vietnam, mobility)
