The aim of this one-semester course will be to provide the student with a complete overview of the history of Korean cinema. By this is meant, first, the history of Korean cinema before partition - i.e., film during the Japanese occupation (1910-45), then in the postwar era (1946-49) and during the Korean War (1950-53). The interpretation will then be divided into an overview of the history of South Korean film, and in particular the era from the First to the Fifth Republic (i.e. 1954-87). The history of North Korean cinema will then be discussed. This will give the student an overview of periods of Korean film history that are not commonly known and usually remain overlooked in the context of the current development of modern Korean cinema a popculture. We will use both the historical framework of the Cold War and the theory of propaganda as a basic starting point. In the case of South Korean film, we will be interested in propaganda related to several military regimes, while in the case of North Korean film, we will be interested in propaganda based on socialist realism that was cultivated throughout the Soviet bloc and the PRC.
Students will get a basic overview of Korean cinema. |
