Topics: 1. Becoming a modern state: Reforms and modernization 2. Japan entering the world of modern politics 3. Fighting for equality: Japan and its wars at turn of centuries 4. Democracy dying: The rise of militarism 5. Second world war in East Asia 6. American occupation of Japan, Yoshida's government 7. Japanese economical miracle 8. Social and political life in Japan from 1960s to 1980s 9. Nature suffering: Japan and ecology 10. Japan's foreign relations and disputed areas 11. Contemporary Japan and trends in the 21st century 12. The image of Japan abroad

Learning outcomes

Upon completing this course, students have a much deeper knowledge of modern Japanese history, are able to analyse and characterize the most important historical consequences. They are able to see and comment on the main historical events in a broader context.

Knowledge of modern Japanese history on the level of 2nd year lectures.
