Course content
This course focuses on selected political and military conflicts happening in Japan between 1156 and 1869. Students will discuss the most important milestones in the history of Japanese military nobility. 1. Introduction 2. Heiji rebellion - Taira no Kiyomori 3. Genpei war - Minamoto no Yoshitsune 4. Jokyu war - Hojo Yasutoki 5. The fall of Kamakura shogunate - Kusunoki Masashige 6. Onin war - Hatakeyama clan 7. The fourth battle of Kawanakajima - Takeda Harunobu 8. Honnoji incident - Akechi Mitsuhide 9. The battle of Sekigahara - Ishida Mitsunari 10. Sakurada Gate incident - Ii Naosuke 11. Taiseihokan - Tokugawa Yoshinobu 12. The Republic of Ezo - Hijikata Toshizo

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to present the most significant events in the history of Japanese military nobility, focusing mainly on outstanding individuals participating in those events.
