This subject focuses on history and description of Japonic languages, i.e. Japanese and its dialects, and Ryukyuan laguages. In the beginning the Japonic language family will be described as a whole, afterwards the focus will shift to the history of Japanese from the earliest period to Modern times. The second half of the semester will be devoted to individual Japanese dialects and Ryukyuan languages. The wide variety of forms will be illustrated using a plethora of examples, recordings, and videos.
