1. Introductory lecture: the basic concept of history of Chinese literature; literature in wenyan and literature in baihua; Chinese novel 2. Preparatory period: political and socially critical novel of late Imperial era; introduction into New Literature Movement and "Literary Revolution" - requierements on language reform, reconsideration of the hierarchy of genres etc., Liang Qichao, Chen Duxiu, Hu Shi; literary societies and journals 3. May Fourth Movement and the beginnings of modern Chinese literature; Lu Xun 4. Authors of the May Fourth generation and their works I. (Mao Dun, Lao She, Ding Ling,...) 5. Authors of the May Fourth generation and their works II. (Yu Dafu, Ba Jin, Guo Moruo, Shen Congwen) 6. Mass literature, communist literature and Chinese socialist realism; Mao Zedong´s "Yan´an Talks"; movements and campaigns of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s 7. Literature after the Cultural Revolution: xin shiqi wenxue: "Scar Literature", zhiqing generation, "new realism" - reform literature, beginnings of modernism 8. Xungen wenxue: "Searching for Roots", theoretical introduction, forerunners; main authors and works (A Cheng, Han Shaogong, Shi Tiesheng, Zheng Wanlong, Li Rui, Wang Anyi...) 9. Xianfeng wenxue - "avantgarde literature" and important authors of the 1980s (Mo Yan, Jia Pingwa, Su Tong, Yu Hua, Can Xue...) 10. New poetry (Jintian group and "Beijing Spring", Bei Dao; menglongshi); new drama, Gao Xingjian 11. The aim of this one-term lecture, which is designed for students of bachelor study of Chinese philology, is to introduce students to the emergence and development of modern Chinese literature from the 19th century to the present, and to describe basic historical-political context of the development of modern Chinese literature. The lectures focus on main stages and trends in the history of modern Chinese literature, and introduce important writers and their works. The literary styles of particular periods, and various literary schools and movements are also discussed in more detail, as well as their connection to the contemporary social development. Students are regularly awarded mandatory reading associated with the currently covered topic. Credits are being awarded for two written tests, which verify the knowledge of specific terms and names in Chinese characters. The examination verifies the oral form of mastering the topic.
The aim of this lecture, which is designed for students of bachelor study Chinese philology, is to introduce students to the history of modern Chinese literature from the late Imperial times to the present.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Written exam
Students are regularly awarded mandatory reading associated with the currently covered topic. Credits are being awarded for two written tests, which verify the knowledge of specific terms and names in Chinese characters. The examination verifies the oral form of mastering the topic.
