This course provides an introduction to the language and culture of the Uyghur people, one of the ethnic groups in Xinjiang, Northwest China. While guiding students through the Uyghur alphabet (in both Arabic and Latin scripts), the course also introduces the history and culture of the region. Students will become familiar with Uyghur cuisine, traditional dress, music, and craftsmanship. Students are expected to participate actively in discussions and complete weekly homework assignments diligently. For the mid-term assignment in Week 6, each student will choose a topic covered in class and deliver a 5-10 minute presentation. The course will conclude with a final exam in Week 13. All lectures and examinations will be conducted in English.
