The seminar will focus on the history of modern Chinese literature beginning with the transitional period in the second half of the 19th century, with a major focus on the development of Chinese literature during the 20th century. Emphasis will be placed on the overall gradual transformation of traditional Chinese society during the first half of the 20th century. The key moments of Chinese political and social development and the main ideological trends that determined the development of literature in the modern era will be presented. The chronological interpretation will be divided into three parts: the transitional period of the end of the empire, the May Fourth Movement generation and literature in the interwar period (xiandai wenxue), and PRC literature (dangdai wenxue). The lectures emphasize major landmarks and trends in the history of modern Chinese literature, focusing on the most significant figures and works.
