This semester-long lecture series provides a brief introduction to classical Chinese literature. The course is designed for students who have taken no or only basic coursework in Chinese literature - primarily for second-year undergraduate students. This course traces the development of Chinese literature from the earliest written texts to the late imperial period, the Qing Dynasty. Lectures are designed chronologically as a history of Chinese literature, introducing each genre as it emerged in different historical periods, always focusing on the most prominent figures and works of the period, but also providing a broader cultural and historical context.
