Learning outcomes
The visual notation of language using standardized marks can take many forms. One of them is a prosodic transcription, which can capture otherwise difficult to grasp elements of spoken language such as stress and caesura. It is particularly important in tonal languages such as Chinese. The long-term observed reduction of fully tonic syllables in modern colloquial language has a significant impact on the overall rhythmic structure of continuous speech. And it is the prosodic transcription that represents a valuable tool with which we are able to look at the language changes as a subject of linguistic analysis. During the course, students will first familiarize themselves with the basic principles of the prosodic transcription developed by O. Švarný. Then, they will use the acquired knowledge in practice while transcribing and analyzing the selected speeches.
