Course content

1. Theoretical Background A. Basic characteristics of the Chinese phonetic system 1. syllable structure in Chinese (nucleus, pretura , coda; initial , the final, medial ) 2. basic knowledge of the Chinese tone system , characteristics of tones (flat , rising , falling - rising and falling) , atonic syllable 3. Pinyin as a universal Chinese phonetic transcription B. Pinyin 1. pinyin transcription writing rules (using of umlauts, position of the tone marks , boundaries of syllables) 2. Practical Training of Pronunciation A. Basic pronunciation practice 1. reading of the table of Chinese syllables in all possible tone realizations ? based on listening and following repeating 2. practicing the pronunciation of the initials: labial, alveolar apical , alveodental, palatal dorsal and velar with the special accent on the contrast aspirated ? not aspirated 3. practicing pronunciation of the finals: with and without initial, nasal finals B. Practicing pronunciation and writing Chinese (Pinyin transcription) 1. isolated tonic syllables - practicing pronunciation and writing 2. connection of two tonic syllables 3. connection of one tonic and one atonic syllable 4. modification of the finals in connection with cacuminal pronunciation (erization)

Learning outcomes
|
Exercise realized in the first semester of the bachelor's degree is designed for students-beginners. This course introduces the basic features of the phonological system of Chinese. After a theoretical introduction follow practical phonetic exercises. During the exercises students apply gained theoretical knowledge and gradually develop their skills in listening and pronunciation of the phonological system of modern Chinese language (initials, finals, syllables, tonal system, a combination of two syllables syllables). The exercises are designed to reflect specific differences in the phonological system of Chinese and Czech and to help students quickly and easily manage the entire system.
This course focuses on communication skills and aid students in developing fluency and listening comprehension in modern colloquial Chinese.

Exercise is assigned for the students of the first year of the bachelor programm CHINESE PHILOLOGY.
