Learning outcomes
|
The course is designed as an intensive language course with daily instruction. It focuses on practical language skills and covers all communicative components of the languagespeaking, writing, reading, listening comprehension, and cultural knowledge. In the first semester, students acquire foundational knowledge of Chinese conversation, grammar, the writing system, and the phonetic system. The course provides comprehensive instruction in the Chinese language. The first semester covers Lessons 1-10 of Integrated Chinese (4th edition). Teaching materials include the textbook and the workbook. The course is taught by Czech instructors and native speakers. As part of instruction in the writing system, students learn the first 368 characters and become familiar with the structure of Chinese characters, stroke order, and character etymology. Phonetics training: During the first semester of language instruction, students take a phonetics course held twice a week for 45 minutes. The exercises introduce students to the basic features of the Chinese phonological system. Following the theoretical introduction, practical phonetic drills allow students to apply what they have learned and gradually develop their skills in listening and pronunciation within the phonological system (initials, finals, syllables, tones, and disyllabic syllable combinations). Successful completion of the course is required for enrollment in the subsequent course, Chinese 2. Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Student performance, Written exam
The course requires continuous preparation from one class to the next. It includes ongoing testing of the material covered and independent completion of character and grammar exercises (weekly quizes). The final exam consists of a written and an oral part: 1. Phonetics test - verifies the ability to record disyllabic combinations of syllables based on dictation. The test contains 100 disyllabic combinations in which the student writes down initials, finals, tones, and the transcription of the full disyllabic combinations. 2. Language skills test - verifies knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and the writing system. The passing threshold depends on the student's continuous work during the semester (ongoing tests, attendance). 3. Oral part - a conversation on the topics covered, testing the ability to form sentences, understand dialogue, and answer questions. To successfully complete the course, all three parts must be passed.
