This one-semester literary seminar follows the basic series of lectures presenting the emergence and development of modern Chinese literature from the mid-19th century to the present in the context of historical and political developments. Through narrative analysis of selected texts, the seminar will focus on the major landmarks and trends in the history of modern Chinese literature, focusing on the most significant figures and works. It will also take a closer look at the question of literary style in different periods, and introduce different schools or types of literature and their interconnection with contemporary social developments. The course aims not only to familiarize the audience with Chinese literary works of the 20th and early 21st centuries, but also to provide some insight into the social atmosphere of each period and to introduce the major ideological, social and cultural trends and phenomena associated with the major historical milestones of different periods.
