During the semester, students will become familiar with the basic principles of sustainable development, its historical context, current global challenges and possibilities for practical application. Attention will be paid to topics such as the Anthropocene, climate change, environmental myths, the circular economy, sustainable water management, biodiversity, energy, food systems, the environmental transformation of cities, and sustainable development in the university environment. The course is designed as an interfaculty course and brings together experts from different fields. Students will therefore have the opportunity to look at sustainability from multiple perspectives and understand how individual topics are interconnected. Emphasis will be placed not only on understanding problems, but also on seeking solutions, engaging in discussion and developing the ability to think critically about the impacts of human activity on society and the environment. The aim of the lecturers is to show that sustainability is not merely a modern term or an abstract concept, but a practical framework for decision-making in personal, academic and professional life. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their own role in processes of sustainable change and to understand how their attitudes, decisions and activities can influence their surroundings, institutions, organisations and companies. The course will also include an introduction to specific sustainability activities at Palacký University Olomouc, including its strategy, action plans, communication of sustainability topics, prevention of greenwashing, and opportunities for students to get involved in university initiatives. The course is intended for students across faculties who wish to gain a better understanding of current challenges in sustainable development, their interconnections and practical possibilities for change.
