Course content
The course focuses on spatial data policy and its legislative, institutional, and organizational aspects, with particular emphasis on their practical implications for geoinformatics and cartography. The course combines theoretical foundations with the analysis of real-world examples and discussions of their impact on professional practice. The topics covered include: - Introduction to spatial data policy and its importance for geoinformatics and cartography. - Legislative framework governing spatial data. - Copyright in geoinformatics and cartography. - Licensing of spatial data, maps, and geoinformation products. - Institutional and sector-specific approaches to spatial data acquisition, management, sharing, and use. - Spatial data policy in selected thematic fields and opportunities for geoinformation processing. - Spatial data metadata, metadata standards, and metadata profiles. - Non-technological aspects of map production and their influence on cartographic products. - Practical examples of legislative and organizational issues related to the use and publication of spatial data. The practical component of the course focuses on the analysis of real-world situations, discussions of selected issues, and the application of acquired knowledge in geoinformation and cartographic practice.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to spatial data policy and its impact on the professional activities of geoinformaticians and cartographers. Emphasis is placed on selected legislative, institutional, and organizational aspects of spatial data acquisition, management, sharing, processing, and publication, as well as the production and dissemination of cartographic outputs. Students will gain an overview of copyright, licensing of spatial data and geoinformation products, sector-specific approaches to spatial data, and opportunities for their application in various thematic fields. Attention is also given to metadata, metadata profiles, and non-technological aspects of map production. The course develops students' ability to critically evaluate the legislative and organizational conditions governing spatial data and to apply the acquired knowledge when addressing practical issues in geoinformatics and cartography.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will understand the fundamental principles of spatial data policy and its importance for professional practice in geoinformatics and cartography. Students will be able to identify and consider selected legislative and non-technological aspects of spatial data management, understand the basic principles of copyright and licensing of spatial data and cartographic products, and assess the conditions governing their use and publication. They will understand the importance of metadata and metadata profiles, be familiar with sector-specific approaches to spatial data, and be able to critically discuss the practical implications of spatial data policy when addressing specific geoinformation and cartographic tasks.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of geoinformatics and cartography, including fundamental principles of spatial data acquisition, processing, and visualization, is expected. No prior knowledge of legal regulations or legislative aspects of spatial data management is required.
