Course content
The course focuses on the historical development of world and Czech cartography, with particular emphasis on changes in cartographic representation methods, the evolution of cartographic works, and prominent figures in the history of cartography. The course covers cartography across different historical periods, from prehistoric times to the present day, historical maps of the Czech lands, and military mapping surveys. It also includes an introduction to the morphometric analysis of historical maps. The topics covered include: - Introduction to the history of cartography - Maps across different historical periods (prehistory, ancient civilizations, classical antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and subsequent periods) - Historical maps of the Czech lands - Military mapping surveys - Prominent cartographers and significant cartographic works - Morphometric analysis of historical maps The course includes seminars focused on discussions of selected topics and the preparation of a semester project. Where organizational arrangements permit, excursions to specialized institutions holding historical map collections are organized.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the historical development of world and Czech cartography, from the earliest cartographic works to modern cartography. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding major milestones in the development of cartographic representation methods, changes in cartographic thinking, and the evolution of maps throughout different historical periods. Where organizational arrangements permit, excursions to specialized institutions holding historical map collections are organized.
Students will gain an overview of the development of cartography across different historical periods, historical maps of the Czech lands, and military mapping surveys. The course also provides a basic introduction to methods of morphometric analysis of historical maps. During seminars, students discuss selected topics and complete a semester project focusing on historical cartography.
Prerequisites
An interest in the history of cartography is expected. No specific cartographic skills are required.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam, Seminar Work

To obtain course credit, attendance at seminars is mandatory, with a maximum permitted absence of 20% of the scheduled classes. Students are required to complete and submit all assigned tasks and defend their semester project. Course credit is awarded based on active participation, successful defense of the semester project, and completion of a short test assessing the knowledge acquired during the course.
