Course content
|
The module takes the form of a professional placement at a selected workplace within the public administration, local government, a research institution, a school, a non-profit organisation or a private company that utilises geographical knowledge and methods. The placement takes place at the Faculty's partner organisations or at another workplace approved by the module coordinator. The content of the placement includes, in particular: 1. Familiarisation with the organisation's activities, its structure and work processes. 2. Involvement in solving professional tasks corresponding to the focus of the degree programme. 3. Working with geographical data, map materials and geoinformation technologies, depending on the organisation's capabilities. 4. Contributing to the collection, processing, analysis and interpretation of spatial and statistical data. 5. Participation in specialist meetings, field surveys or project activities. 6. Familiarisation with the legislative and organisational aspects of practising geographical professions. 7. Ongoing consultation on results with the mentor at the workplace and the academic supervisor of the work placement.

Learning outcomes

Work placement at a selected public or private institution whose activities correspond to the graduate's profile - specialised departments within the state administration or local government at municipal, regional and central levels, e.g. departments, divisions and units dealing with spatial planning, regional development, etc.; non-governmental project, advisory and consultancy agencies focusing, for example, on the development of strategic plans, services relating to the design of effective spatial localisations, etc.; institutions focusing on regional, social, economic or environmental issues and on issues of spatial interactions.
Upon successful completion of the module, the student will: - apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during their studies to solve specific tasks in geographical practice; - be familiar with the activities of institutions, organisations and businesses in which geography graduates find employment; - use basic geographical methods, geoinformation technologies and spatial data when carrying out specialist work tasks; - independently carry out specific specialist tasks under the guidance of staff at the host organisation; - communicate with practitioners and work as a member of a work team.

Prerequisites
|
This module builds on previous theoretical modules, in which students acquire a foundation in geography that they will go on to develop further during work placements in public or private institutions.

Student performance
Requirements for credit: confirmation of the placement by a mentor at the host institution and a consultation on the results of the placement with the academic supervisor responsible for the placement
