Course content
The student will be acquainted with theoretical backgrounds of interaction of microorganisms and geological materials - rocks, soils and anthropogenic inorganic materials. The course involves short overview of microorganisms active in this interaction and of their diversity. It describes metabolic processes in these microorganisms and their action on mineral surfaces. Special attention is paid to processes like oxidation of manganese and sulfides, deposition of calcite and silica by algae, microbial weathering of sulfides, rocks and building materials and to microbial activities in extreme conditions. In relation to this, biogeochemical cycles of selected elements will be explained.
