Evolution of reproduction. Sex determination and methods of influencing sex. Comparative morphology and physiology of the female reproductive system. Spermatogenesis. Semen composition and comparative sperm morphology. Oogenesis and morphology of the mammalian oocyte. The process of fertilization. Physiology of pregnancy. Maternal hormonal profile. Maternal-fetal interactions. Physiology of parturition. Reproductive ethology. Fundamentals of the prevention of fertility disorders. Methods of manipulating the reproductive cycle. Selected assisted reproductive technologies: ovum pick-up (OPU), oocyte selection, intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), in vitro culture, cryopreservation, embryo selection, and nuclear transfer. Basic cloning techniques. Aging of the reproductive system. Ethical and legal aspects of assisted reproduction.
