Course content
Plant pathogenic micro-organism: viruses, viroids, bacteria and fungi, their biological characteristics. Mechanisms generating genetic variability of microorganisms. Molecular taxonomy of microorganisms. Pathogen infection cycle at cellular and molecular level. Genetics of plant- pathogen interactions (resistance and avirulence genes). Mechanisms of resistance, induced resistance and non-host resistance (immunity, resistance, sensitivity, tolerance, hypersensitivity). Molecular determinants of pathogenicity and mechanisms of their action (toxins, enzymes, growth regulators, direct interaction with host DNA). Mechanisms of activation of host defense (elicitors, receptors, signal transduction, systemic acquired resistance, induced systemic resistance). Pathogen infection and host defense suppression. Gene silencing: principles and applications, transgenic plants and pathogen-derived resistance. Application of functional genomics, forward and reverse genetics in plant-pathogen studies and molecular diagnostcs. Microbiomes, their analyses using PCR and sequencing of new generation.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Dialogic Lecture (Discussion, Dialog, Brainstorming), Work with Text (with Book, Textbook)
Learning outcomes
Aim of the course is provide students with biology, genetics and biochemistry of plant-pathogen interactions; introduced them with molecular genetics methods of studying microorganisms.
Students will be able after attending the course: - to characterize phytopathogenic microorganisms - to explain the genetic aspects of plant-pathogen interactions and the host plant at molecular level - to explain role of pathogenicity determinants during pathogenesis - to describe role of plant defense defense mechanisms during pathogenesis - to applicate the modern molecular genetics methods for study of microorganisms diversity - to applicate the modern molecular genetics methods for study of plant-pathogen interactions - to discuss the problems of plant-pathogen interactions
