Course content
Disease, classification of diseases, characterization and classification of their causal agents (viroids, viruses, bacteria, phytoplasmas, RLO, protozoans, oomycetes, fungi, algae, parasitic plants and animals). Parasitism and pathogenicity, patogenic potential and its determinants. Specificity of plant-pathogen interactions, mechanisms coding for specificity of the interactions between plants and pathogens, evolution of parasitism and pathogenicity. Stages in the development of disease: the disease cycle, mechanisms of pathogen dissemination, pathogenesis - development of infection structures, pathogen life cycles. Effects of pathogens on plant physiology, metabolic processes conferring susceptibility, resistance or tolerance. Genetics of plant disease. Environmental effects on development of infectious plant disease. Population biology, epidemiology and pathometry, general principles of disease forecasting and control, disease warning systems. Specification and ethiology of plant diseases of economical importance.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Dialogic Lecture (Discussion, Dialog, Brainstorming)
Learning outcomes
Biology of plant pathogens - postgraduate level
- Recall phytopathological terminology and characteristics of causal microorganisms - List biotic interactions, specificity of host-pathogen interactions - Describe plant susceptibility, resistance mechanisms and explain plant-pathogen genetics - Define anatomical and biochemical processes involved in plant responses to stress stimuli - Define influence of environmental conditions on disease development and spread - Identify common diseases of economically significant crops in the Czech Republic
