Course content
Basic terminology related to the conservation of genetic diversity of wild plant species, survey of important literature. Main factors endargering flora and vegetation of the Czech Republic. Conservation of plant biodiversity from the taxonomical and phytogeographical point of view. Red books and red lists. Extinct, missing and endangered plant species in the Czech Republic. Conservation of genetic diversity of lichenes and mosses. Endangered plant communities in the Czech Republic. Genetic diverzity of crop species, centers of origin and diverzity of cultivated plants, germplasm collections, landraces, wild species, wild progenitors, concept of gene pools, breeding and genetic manipulations. Green revolution, consequences of genetic uniformity, examples of the use of wild species and landraces for introgression of resistance genes. The Action and Management Plans for critically endangered and endangered plant species. Introduction to conservation genetics of plants. Genetic aspect of domestication, domestication and selection, genes related to domestication process. In situ and ex situ collections, types of germplasm collections, databases, documentation, organisation and equipment of gene banks, regeneration and storage. Collection missions, collections of botanical gardens. Descriptors of germplasm collections - definition, examples of use. Survey of important national and international institutions focussed on the use of germplasm collections.

The course provides information on theoretical aspects of plant conservation.
Student should be able to (after attending the course): - Explain main terms in Plant Conservation. - Define theoretical aspects of Nature Conservation of wild and cultivated plants, i.e. vascular plants, bryophytes, and main vegetation units. - Recall history of Crop evolution.
