Course content
The course provides an overview of the systematic, morphological, evolutionary, ecological and geographical diversity of native and important cultivated woody plants. Emphasis is placed on the identification and practical determination of woody plants based on diagnostic morphological characters, as well as on understanding their systematic position and phylogenetic relationships. Individual taxa are also characterised in terms of taxonomic and nomenclatural issues, evolution and biosystematics, native distribution, ecological requirements, and their importance in natural and cultivated vegetation. Particular attention is paid to woody plants native to the Czech Republic and to important introduced species cultivated in Central Europe. The practical component of the course uses living plant material in the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science, Palacký University Olomouc, and in urban parks.

Learning outcomes

1) explain the systematic position and phylogenetic relationships of the major groups of woody plants and characterise their important evolutionary and morphological features (KRAAU 1.1.1, 1.1.7); 2) characterise the major taxonomic groups, families and genera of native and important cultivated woody plants and provide examples of their typical representatives (KRAAU 1.1.1); 3) recognise and interpret diagnostic morphological characters of woody plants and use them to distinguish between related and morphologically similar taxa (KRAAU 1.1.1); 4) explain relationships between the taxonomy of woody plants and their biosystematic, evolutionary, ecological and phytogeographical characteristics (KRAAU 1.1.7); 5) characterise the native woody flora of the Czech Republic, the ecological requirements of important native species, and their relationships with major habitat and vegetation types (KRAAU 1.1.1, 1.1.7); 6) distinguish between native and introduced woody plants and characterise the origin, distribution and ecological characteristics of important species cultivated in Central Europe (KRAAU 1.1.1, 1.1.7); 7) recognise and identify the principal species and genera of native and commonly cultivated woody plants in the Czech Republic using diagnostic characters and specialist identification resources (KRAAU 1.1.1, 1.1.3); 8) use specialist dendrological, taxonomic and nomenclatural literature and appropriate digital information resources, and critically evaluate the information obtained (KRAAU 1.1.3, 1.1.4).
