Course content
Phylogeny of bryophytes and their relationships to the algae and tracheophytes. History of bryology in our country and in the world.Anatomy and morphology of bryophytes. Modes of reproduction. Bryophyte systematics. Ecology of bryophytes (adaptation to the main ecological factors, biotopes, bryophyte communities and their relationships to plant vegetation communities). Bryogeography (geographic distribution of bryophytes through the world, areas, disjunctions and opinions on their origin). Bryophytes and their economic importance. Mosses and liverworts as the good indicators for environmental conditions. Threatened bryophytes, Red-lists of endangered bryophytes; activities to the bryophyte protection in the world and in the Czech Republic. Practical determination of common and important bryophyte species; determination keys; basic principles of bryophytes collection and preparation; the most important herbarium collections in the world and in the Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes
Characteristics of bryophytes, their position within the plant system.
Student should be able to (after attending the course): - describe main anatomical and morphological determination characters of bryophytes - describe taxonomical groups of bryophytes and their the import imortant representatives - recall background on ecology and phytogeography of bryophytes - apply determination keys in bryophytes identification - apply preparation methods and herbarisation of bryophytes - identify 60 common species of bryophytes in Czechia

100% attendance at practise, determination test on ca. 60 common bryophyte species, oral discussion
