Course content
1. Contemporary sociology Origins of sociology. Basic sociological thoughts. Berger: Invitation to sociology. 2. Sociology of deviance. Basic approaches to deviances. Functions of social deviances. 3. Origins of sociology of deviance. Durkheim, Merton. 4. Labeling. Lemert, Becker, Shur. Delabeling. 5. Social construction of deviances. Berger, Luckmann: Social construction of reality. 6. Social control. Foucault: Discipline and Punish, Madness and Civilization, History of Sexuality. 7. Normal or deviant? Bauman - Holocaust: when the normal is the deviant. 8. Culture of poverty Ethnicity of defiance and social exclusion. 9. Sociology of politics Weber: capitalism and bureaucracy. 10. Democracy: freedom or equality? De Tocqueville: tyranny of majority. J. St. Mill: freedom of expression. 11. Criticism of totalitarianism Hayek: The Road to Serfdom. Havel: Stories and totalitarianism. 12. Globalization The crisis of nation-state. Beck: Risk society.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the students into the sociological terminology and historical origins of sociology, which are associated with the transformation of traditional society to a modern one. The classics of sociology, their concepts and theories will be explained in the course.
To be able to describe and analyse basic theories of social deviance. To apply these theories (above all social constructivism and labeling theory) on social reality. To deconstruct stereotypes concerning deviance of ethnicity or mental illness. To define, describe, explain and interpret basic terms of sociology of politics and to be able to question them. To discuss basic theses of sociology of politics in the context of contemporary politics, to analyse the in this context and to apply them into this context. To be able to apply above mentioned skills in the context of judicial thinking.
