Course content
Lectures 1. Interwar period - situation in Europe in between 1WW and 2WW, Proposals on European integration - PanEuropean Movement, Briand's European Union, Hitler's vision on United Europe, Federalist Movement 2. Europe after the 2WW - German Question, Europe's division, Western Europe - federalism vs. unionism vs. monnetarism 3. European Coal and Steel Community, European Defense Community, European Economic Community 4. Gaullism and European Communities - Empty Chair Crisis, Luxembourg Compromise 5. British attitude towards the European Integration - From the Refusal to the Accession 7. Eurosclerosis in the 1970s - Hague Conference, Institutional Changes, European Monetary System 8. Towards the Single Market - Political Changes in Europe in 1980s, Acceleration of the European Integration, Single European Act 9. Maastricht Treaty - completion of the single market, economic and monetary union, common foreign and security policy, justice and home affairs 10. Institutional and Policy Development of the EU in the view of the Eastern Enlargement 11. Convent and the Constitution for Europe 12. Lisbon Treaty and beyond Seminars: 1. Learning outcomes
The main aim of this course is to introduce to the historical development of the European Union from its foundation to the present day and to show how historical processes relate to the present situation. In terms of knowledge, the aim of the course is to explain the reasons that led to the establishment of the EC//EU, to explain the institutional design of EC/EU, in particular the link between the supranational and intergovernmental principles and their interplay, to identify key actors in the different stages of the EC/EU development (e.g. key personalities, member states), to identify key changes in the historical process of EU integration (e.g. primary law revisions, enlargements), and to learn about the influence of the external actors on the development of European integration. The course builds on the LOUIS competence framework developed within the AURORA universities alliance. In terms of competences, the course develops especially critical thinking, integrative learning and oral communication.
Students who have completed this course get the knowledge and skills required to detailed comprehension of historical background of European integration. The course supports the development of critical thinking, integrative learning and oral communication.
Prerequisites
The completion of this course is not conditioned upon completion of any other courses.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark

It is essential that those students who would like to get the credit must have attendance within the scope set by the seminar teacher, have a presentation and they also must succeed in the exam.
