Learning outcomes

The subject Criminal Law Clinic 1 should enable students to connect the theoretical knowledge of criminal law, gained on four-term subjects Substantial Criminal Law 1 and 2 and Procedural Criminal Law 1 and 2, with the practice of the Czech criminal justice. Students will revise theoretical principals of procedural law on specific cases from common practice and will learn to apply this knowledge mostly in criminal defence. During the study block, students divided into smaller groups will analyse the assigned case and prepare a proper way of defence. Afterwards, they will introduce their analysis and chosen way of defence to other students and a discussion will follow on how proper and effective it is. A discussion with a preceding judge (a single judge) and a prosecutor will also take place, so that the practical benefit does not only include defence. Criminal Law Clinic 1 focuses on the preliminary hearing, which represents the stage of criminal procedure from the criminal procedure actions initiation to investigation termination and decision in preliminary hearing.
In this subject, students connect their theoretical knowledge of criminal law with practical skills. They will understand the principals and process of the preliminary hearing in real cases in practice. There will also be a focus on legal ethics of defence in criminal procedure.
