Learning outcomes
The formation of attachment between a primary caregiver and a child determines further development of their relationship as well as both their physical and mental health. Any disruptions to healthy development of attachment has lifelong effects. Knowledge of attachment and of ways of practical support of its healthy formation are absolutely crucial for future parents as well as all members of society who come into contact with new families. The class focuses especially on acquiring and practicing skills on top of theoretical knowledge. The skills may be used: - To accompany and offer practical help to parents of infants - healthy ones as well as those with impaired psychomotor development including those in special situations such as adoptive parenting - To prepare oneself for parenting and to gain self-confidence in parenting abilities and skills - To improve communicational skills in counselling, especially with young families Topics: - Introduction into attachment, practical tools for forming a strong attachment - Birth and first hours: skin-to-skin contact and scientific proofs - Neuroscience and mother behaviour after birth - Neuroscience for parents and babies - Anthropological and sociological proofs for skin-to-skin contact - The importance of breastfeeding for health, initiation of breastfeeding, prevention of problems, support of professionals - Breastfeeding and healthy eating, introducing solids, healthy lifestyle - Sleep and baby-wearing; purpose of crying; calming the baby - Breastfeeding help and counselling, help with eating in the first year of life - Caring for infants in special situations (twins, big families, adoption, child with a disability, parent with a disability?) - Communication skills of a counsellor /professional, new parents´ needs, risk groups - Breastmilk substitutes marketing, Ethical questions, protection of parents and children
