Course content
Students are introduced to the origins of modern Czech literature as it was being shaped at the beginning and during the first half of the 20th century. The emphasis is placed on mainstreams and trends influencing the development of Czech literature (symbolism, anarchism, civilism, poetism, proletarianism and surrealism).

Learning outcomes
This course describes Czech literature originating within the period 1895 - 1945. Basic trends, mainstreams, and literary groups are described. Topics include: cultural and political development, magazines and their importance for literary history, history of literary criticism, censorship, Prague German-written works, symbolism, decadence, anarchism, impressionism.
