Course content
1) General Overview of Language (Language and its functions. Linguistics and its disciplines. Classification of Czech within the system of world languages.) 2) Stratification of the National Language (Varieties of the national language. Language norm and codification, codification handbooks, language usage.) 3) Phonetics and Phonology (Definition of phonetics and phonology. Respiration, articulation, phonation. Sound changes typical for Czech.) 4) Classification of Czech Sounds (Classification of consonants and vowels based on voicing, place, and manner of articulation.) 5) Sound Features of Continuous Speech (Phrasing and modulation elements. Standard pronunciation, pronunciation styles, incorrect pronunciation, speech disorders, and pronunciation defects.) 6) Czech Orthography (Types of orthography with specific examples of spelling phenomena. Typographic norms with concrete examples.) 7) Vocabulary (Lexicology as a scientific discipline. Active and passive vocabulary. Processes of change in the Czech language's vocabulary, univerbization, and multiverbization.) 8) Word Formation (Word formation processes. Word-formation analysis - base and derived words, word formation base and means.) 9) Word and its Meaning (Lexical, grammatical, and lexically-grammatical words. Semantic relationships between words. Unmarked and marked words.)

Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, students should be able to: - Explain how language functions, its purposes, and navigate the main linguistic disciplines. They can also classify Czech within the system of world languages. - Explain the stratification of the Czech national language, describe linguistic norms, codification, and use codification handbooks. They can recognize and apply the correct linguistic usage. - Define the differences between phonetics and phonology, describe basic processes related to respiration, articulation, and phonation, and identify typical sound changes in Czech. - Classify consonants and vowels based on their voicing, place, and manner of articulation. - Identify phrasing and modulation elements in spoken language, distinguish pronunciation styles, and recognize deviations from standard pronunciation, including speech disorders and pronunciation defects. - Distinguish types of orthography and provide specific examples of spelling phenomena. Apply typographic standards in practice. - Explain basic concepts of lexicology, distinguish between active and passive vocabulary, and describe processes of vocabulary change, including univerbization and multiverbization. - Analyze words in terms of word formation processes, distinguish between base and derived words, and determine word formation bases and means. - Differentiate between lexical, grammatical, and lexically-grammatical words, understand the semantic relationships between words, and identify unmarked and marked words in context.
