The student will be able to: - explain the socio-cultural framework of the individual periods of the studied period. - student will be able to explain the basic concepts and acquire literary terminology. - identify the linguistic, formal, compositional and poetic features of a literary monument or set of literary monuments, their genre definition. - characterize and describe the life of the author(s) of literary works, or the literary monument itself, analyze the content and meaning of a literary monument. - analyze and interpret individual literary works of earlier literary periods. - recognize the artistic and social significance of a work through specific literary examples. - apply primary methodological practices of interpreting a work related to the development of literacy. - justify a critical approach to interpreting a work and respond appropriately in discussions of the artistic merit of a work. Topics: Greek mythology, classical Greek drama, Greek philosophy and rhetoric, Greek history, Hellenistic period of the Orient cultures, literature of the Roman period of ancient Rome, republic and empire, Cicero and Caesar, Roman history - Tacitus and Suetonius, Vergilius, Horatius, Ovid, Claudianus - the abduction of Proserpina, Iuvenalis - satires, Petronius, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, Old Testament, New Testament, Church Fathers and Aurelius Augustinus, Boethius. Literary monuments of Great Moravia, St. Wenceslas, St. Ludmilla and St. John legends, the Chronicle of Cosmas, Medieval spiritual lyrics (after the Hussites), medieval drama, Dalimilus' Chronicle and Alexandreides, medieval satire, predecessors of Hus, Legend of St. Catherine and Legend of St. Procopius, Weaver, Master Jan Hus, Petr Chelčický.
