Thematic focus: Introduction to the relationship between literature and film, typology of adaptations and basic tools of film analysis. Teaching method: Face-to-face teaching block for combined students, 3 teaching units (3 × 60 minutes). Block 1 (15:30-16:30) Topic: Literature and film as different forms of narration Content: - Introductory discussion: "How is narration done in literature and in film?" - Sample: Hrabal's short story Automat Svět + excerpt from the film Perličky na dne - Activity: Analysis of the narrator, narrative rhythm and construction of space in both versions. - Methodology: Guided discussion, pair work (text vs. film), writing notes in the table. Block 2 (16:40-17:40) Topic: Adaptation theory and typology Content: - Explanation: types of adaptations (faithful, free, thematic, intermedial - according to Bluestone, McFarlane). - Activity: Working with examples - identifying the type of adaptation (e.g. Grandma from 1971 vs. TV adaptation). - Methodology: Working with a worksheet, schematic representation of the relationship between text and film. Block 3 (17:50-18:45) Topic: Basics of film analysis (image, sound, editing) Content: - Projection of a section from the film The Incinerator (without sound). - Activity: Individual analysis: what do I see, what is the composition of the image, the rhythm of editing, camera movement. - Reflection: How does film create meaning without words? - Methodology: Discussion of audiovisual means and their function, basic film terminology.

After completing the course students should be able to: - To characterize the Czech literature in basic parameters in relation to the film. - Understand elementary issues in the broad field of adaptation theory. - Use the knowledge of Czech literature and Czech film in primary school education. - Systematically structured interpretations of cinematographic works in relation to literary works.
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: characterize the basic relationships between literary and cinematic works; understand the principles and types of film adaptation; use the basic conceptual apparatus of film analysis and interpretation; distinguish the formal and ideological differences between a literary work and its adaptation; evaluate the possibilities and limits of transmedia transfer with emphasis on the target audience; suggest ways of using literary and film works in teaching at primary school; apply knowledge in the interpretation of Czech and world literary works in film processing; cultivate media literacy and aesthetic perception of pupils through intermediality. |

Student performance, Seminar Work
Preparation of a seminar paper including: introduction of the selected literary work and its film adaptation (including bibliographic data); interpretation of the main theme/message of both works; analysis of the differences between the literary and film versions in terms of narrative structure, media language, ideological shift or style; application of the basic tools of film interpretation (composition, editing, cinematography, acting, sound); overview of the sources used in a unified and professional citation (e.g. ISO 690, APA). Requirements for students with ISP: - Submission of a seminar paper of 5 standard pages (excluding title page and final list of references) on the comparison of any book and its film treatment. The seminar paper should include: (a) a brief introduction of your chosen book (author, year of publication, illustrator, etc.) and film (director, producers, length of film, etc.); b) the main theme/idea/message of the publication and film: this is not a summary of the content, but an excerpt of the main idea or mission; c) a description of the differences between the publication and its film adaptation; d) a detailed interpretation of the film through the use of basic interpretative tools; (e) a list of literature, films viewed, etc., in the form of a valid bibliographic citation of your choice (ISO 690, APA, etc.). |
